Working Parties
To the
Membership
As
you all realise the ponds seem to be a little neglected. Paths, pegs,
trees, etc. as a result of this, the committee had a meeting to decide what
action needs to be taken. As of January, Work Parties will be held on the
last Sunday of every month. The dates, meeting point etc, for these will be
posted on the web site and will be issued with your renewal. The work
parties are essential for the club to keep on top of the maintenance of the
waters. I would urge all members to try and attend at least one work party
throughout the year. Keeping the ponds clear and maintained is in the
interests of all the members. I would also like to mention that the only
way that the committee can sort out any problems appertaining to the club
waters is for the members to bring these concerns up at the monthly
meetings or if desired by e-mail to the club web site. The monthly meetings
are held on the last Tuesday of the month at the Friendship Inn on Arundel
Street Glossop. Your say is important and will not fall on deaf ears. There
are a small number of members who do attend both work parties and meetings
and we are very grateful for their assistance. I would like to see many
more faces at the monthly work parties and club meetings. G.A.A.S. is worth
looking after and all we ask is a little time and effort.
Yours Trustingly Fred
Sullivan.

Success on the heath
A big thank you to all that turned out
for the February working party on Sunday, it was a huge success, and
although not everybody turned up that said they would we managed to complete
all the work we set out to do. We managed to re-instate wire fencing along
the narrow bank, one of those jobs that seems to get put off time after time
and hangs around forever. We laid six ton of M.O.T. from the pond side of
the style to form a more solid path where before it was just a mud patch. A
new silt trap has been installed at the out let, although the previous one
was cobbled together with a few stumps and a couple of pieces of ply wood it
did last for about ten years, the new one though is solid timber and will
hopefully last considerably longer. We have built a proper peg at the corner
of the pond where you walk on. A semi circle of sand bags have been stacked
two high and a nylon liner placed behind them this has then had two ton of
grit soil placed on top of it to form a flat area, in a couple of months we
will place turf over the top to finish it off and hopefully be left with a
really nice peg from which to fish one of the favoured swims on the pond. As
always there was a load of rubbish to be cleared away, as no one ever leaves
any I wonder how it gets there?
mmm I’ll have to think about that one.
We also had time to repair the style
onto Top North Road, attach some barbed wire to the fence on the bottom pond
and clear the accumulated rubbish from both
.
How does it get there?
What a good day it was!!! We managed to
get a couple of chaps down to Dinting as well, to clear the rubbish from all
three ponds. This was no mean task as there is a lot of area to cover, a lot
of rubbish to pick up and a blooming long way to carry it.
It
really makes my blood boil having to clear up after these lazy, morons that
leave it lying around but I suppose that’s life.
Fee’s to rise in 2009
Dear
Members
In
1996, membership to GAAS cost only £25,
a more than reasonable bargain, even for then. Since then, there has only been one rise
of £5, which as actually a contribution to the Maintenance Fund. That
increase occurred three years ago and did not reflect the increase in costs
due to inflation over that period.
The club now finds itself in a position where all the ponds are in
dire need of serious maintenance.
With this in mind, unfortunately the cost of membership is to
increase to £40, up £10, and there will only be one discount for working
parties, taking it down to £25.
Whilst the increase seems drastic, it is only redressing the
shortfall due to inflation since 1996, and still represents excellent value
for money. £40 per year for eight
ponds? Two visits to a commercial fishery would cost more, with fuel, bait,
peg fees etc.
For
the maximum benefit to the club, and therefore the members, there will be
regular work parties on the last Sunday of the month, except December,
always meeting at North Road. Specific, pre-planned tasks will be
undertaken, and a committee member will supervise each work party. Materials will, where necessary, be
obtained prior to the work party and larger specialist tools will be hired,
borrowed or bought. As always you
should bring handtools, shovels etc.
A limit of 20 members per work party will be imposed to enable the
efficient usage of the available manpower and members must book on in
advance to 07826122705. If the club finds itself in a position
where too few members are attending, the work will, in all probability, be
farmed out to contractors, with the inevitable increase in expense. This will put a severe strain on the
clubs resources, quite possibly leading to further increases in
subscriptions.
To avoid this situation it is in your own interest to make every
effort to attend a work party and contribute to the effort of making this
club one that we deserve and can take pride in.
The
Committee.
Hodges
The
do-nut pond is having a rise and fall issue of around 18in. On wet days its
up and on dry days its down. There is enough water to keep fish healthy in the pond,
but is it enough of a rise and fall issue to keep us anglers happy? If we
want to keep a constant water level then there is clearly much more work to
be done. However if we are happy with things the way they are then there is
no reason why we should not stock this pond in the coming autumn.
On
one hand you might say we should get it perfect before we stock it, after
all there pegs to be constructed, paths to be made and mild landscaping to
complete. On the other hand have we been messing about with this pond for
long enough as it is, maybe it’s about time we got some fish into it
and started making use of it. I’m sure all you anglers out there will
want your say and it will come up for much discussion at the next few
monthly meetings. Let’s hope that a speedy resolution will be just
around the corner.
Cormorants In Glossop
The
problems that we have been experiencing for a number of years on back lodge
with the above pests have now appeared on front lodge. Having struggled
with a solution to the problem on back, and after much consultation, there
may be some light at the end of the tunnel. After many hours surfing the
“net” looking at other fisheries having the same problem , the
introduction of floating vegetation rafts have succeeded in reducing the
numbers of aviation pests whilst encouraging fish spawning and aquatic
vegetation growth.
As to the problem on front lodge the introduction
of ropes stretched across the pond would impede the landing and taking off
of the pest. This solution would be a more immediate one than the rafts on
back lodge but no less effective.
Although
the introduction of the ropes on front lodge would be a relatively easy
undertaking it would not be practicable to do this on back lodge as there
are too few large trees to use as anchor points.
A
long walk for anglers at Dinting
As
many of you will already know, Glossop Anglers are no longer invited to use
the car park opposite front lodge. It would seem that after more than
thirty years of uninterrupted cooperation, the car park is no longer big
enough for us to use. The loss of this facility will be felt most by the
less able bodied amongst us, who will have to walk further from the nearest
legal safe parking spaces on the main A57. There is unfortunately very
little the club can do about this situation, however we are seeking
alternatives and will let you know if any becomes available to us.
Side
Lodge still losing water
Anyone
who fishes side lodge will know that the water level has been going up and
down like a fiddlers elbow for the last couple of years and guess what? It
still is. But we do now know where it is leaking from, Hooray!!! Unfortunately,
we are losing in excess of a couple of hundred gallons an hour through this
leak. “CRIPES” We hear, that’s rather a lot. Yes it is,
but we know how to fix it, Hooray!!! Unfortunately fixing it will involve
rather a lot of puddle-clay, which is not in itself a problem, but finding
somewhere to put the bloody stuff on delivery could be a bit tricky.
“OH BOTHER” Not to worry though, we have a [cunning plan]
Yes
folks with the help of many, many volunteers, (that means you), we shall
have it dropped not too far from the gate and then barrow it all the way
round to the far end next to Keroc’s where there will be more
“mugs”, um, I mean
volunteers, to pack the clay
into place.
HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!
We’ll let you know when
Junior members Update
Due
to work commitments, the 2007 Junior season got off to a late start, not
getting under way until June 27th, with only three of last seasons
regulars, making an appearance.
Between them they managed
to give a creditable display of angling that was reflected in the placings
at the end of the season. Whilst the weights at the end of the match were
not brilliant, Ryan Turner, Paul Matley and Ashley Mellor showed that there
is more to fishing than dangling a bait in the water and hoping for a bite.
Using, fairly inexpensive tackle they are beginning to show an
understanding of different methods and techniques, skills that can only
improve with age and experience.
As
the season progressed, more anglers joined the ranks, all showing varying
levels of skill but all having better than basic knowledge of the sport.
George Webster and Elliot Moore, two more of last season’s regulars,
made a couple of matches, but because of other sports they take part in
they couldn’t get too many. Jack Deakin joined us for one match
partway through the season, as did Rhys Stratton. All but one of the matches were fished on
Glossop waters and it was impossible to predict a champion at any point.
Two anglers, Ryan and Ashley, tied on points going into the last match, the
John Ryan Memorial match fished on the Front Lodge at Dinting. As the
decider drew to a close, it was obvious that only the scales were going to
declare the champion and at the final reckoning, 1oz separated the top
weights with the verdict going to Ryan. Congratulations to him and
commiserations to Ashley who pushed Ryan to the end. Paul came a
commendable third.
The
2008 season will start in mid-June, exact dates for which will be provided
later. They are fished on a point’s basis, 6 for 1st, 5 for 2nd, 4
for 3rd etc. Each angler’s worst two results are dropped from the
final tally, allowing for holidays etc.
There are only two conditions for joining in: you obviously have to
have fishing tackle, including a keep net, and you must be a member of the
club. If you are too young to be a member, you must be accompanied by a
senior member. There are no entry fees to the matches, the only cost being
for the one away match that is arranged for July/August. The matches are
run on a very informal basis and are also used as teaching sessions for
those with lower levels of skill. If
you fancy yourself as Bob Nudd or Alan Scotthorne of the future, watch out
on the website for the fixture list and bring yourself along to the matches
and show us what you can do.
On
a more personal note, I would like to thank Lee, Paul’s grandfather,
for his help during the last few seasons. If any other members would like
to help for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, you are more than welcome.
You can reach me, Steve Allison, on 07931 154125.
It
should be mentioned that the junior matches are as much for the beginners
to the sport of Angling as it is for the more experienced. No matter
whether you are struggling to tie hooks or not sure how to shot your float
you will get all the help and encouragement we can give you. Above all we
want all our members to enjoy their fishing.
The date of the AGM is 27th
MAY 08.

Welcome Members to another year
Over the last few years many changes and improvements have
been made to the quality of the fishing and the facilities for fellow
members, with the commitment and hard work from a
conscientious committee, the club in whole has gone from strength to
strength, with
a steady increase in membership to a degree were it was felt prudent to
close the membership at 400. This is a sign of the popularity and success of
the developments made so far. However you can never stand still and we are
striving now to complete the development of the second water at Hodges and
hopefully stock it with a high standard of fish. That could potentially make
this the Premiere water of G.A.A..S. A pre requisite budget has already been
set and the types of preferred fish, size and quantity voted on at previous
meetings. With the water level seeming to now be stable and we would hope to
stock this water in 2008. Also in 2008, we hope to have solved the problem
of too many or not enough people attending working parties, this new scheme
we would hope will benefit everyone and aid in our goal of bringing all the
waters upto a high and safe standard, to further enhance your use and
enjoyment of the facilities and a good days fishing. Well time for me to
sign off, but before I go don’t forget if you want to know more about the
things happening within the club, you can check out our website at
www.glossopanglers.co.uk and as valued members we would appreciate your
input, so please join us at the monthly meetings which are held at the
Friendship Inn, Arundal St, Glossop staring at 8.30pm on the last Tuesday of
every month except for December.
